The School of Biological and Marine Sciences offers a range of top class programmes across Biological Sciences, Marine Biology and Marine Science, as well as being home to a substantial body of world class research. Facilities supported from the School include the Marine Station, and a wide range of specialist laboratory and holding/experimental facilities including aquaria and greenhouses. Staff expertise spans a broad range of disciplines including oceanography, marine policy, ecophysiology, ecology, evolution, biochemistry and behaviour, in both marine and terrestrial environments.
The focus of this Research Assistantship will be to build and test a capacitor-based high-voltage horizon drive, based on a theory called quantised inertia (QI). The QI theory assumes that inertia is caused by an interaction between the quantum vacuum and matter and predicts that new thrust can appear in highly-accelerated systems in metal cavities. Indeed, there is evidence that capacitors with dielectrics subject to electron emission move towards their anode. The thrust is large enough to enable launch, and is predicted by quantised inertia. Your responsibility will be firstly, to investigate this by building a high-voltage (5kV) capacitor & dielectric system at the University of Plymouth, and then modify the setup, under the supervisors’ direction, to enhance the thrust.
You must have a degree in electrical engineering, physics with electronics or similar. In addition, some practical experience in electrical engineering in industry or research is essential. A knowledge of field emission in cathodes and high voltage systems would be an advantage. Recruitment will be based on merit alone.
Please demonstrate how you meet the essential criteria outlined in the knowledge, qualifications, training and experience elements of the job description in your supporting statement.
Interviews are likely to take place in early July and you will be notified if you have been shortlisted or not.
We offer a competitive salary package and a generous pension and holiday scheme. We also offer a range of other benefits, including ongoing development opportunities.
