Lecturer in Biological Sciences
Description
The School of Biological Sciences at Plymouth University is looking to appoint a dynamic, highly motivated, enthusiastic academic to contribute to its ongoing success. We are inviting applications to this new lecturer post to complement and build on our existing research and teaching strengths. We would particularly welcome applications from those interested
in mechanistic aspects of vertebrate and invertebrate animal welfare (e.g. neurobiology, genetics, nutrition) and animal health (e.g. parasitology, immunology, epidemiology), or applied aspects of animal health/welfare such as animal husbandry. Those working on fish systems would be particularly encouraged to apply, but this is not an essential requirement.
You will combine an aspiration to be world-class in your area of research with enthusiastic and research-informed teaching. You will contribute to the teaching within the School, for example on our BSc in Animal Behaviour & Welfare, MSc in Zoo Conservation Biology and/or MSc in Sustainable Aquaculture Systems. You will be expected to contribute significantly to the research profile of the School of Biological Sciences, which currently includes interests in animal welfare, animal behaviour, physiology, aquaculture, animal nutrition, ecotoxicology, evolutionary biology, marine/terrestrial ecology and conservation, and microbiology. This includes a commitment to specialist research facilities that currently comprise: a behavioural experiment suite and dedicated aquarium, alongside extensive general laboratory facilities.
You will have a doctorate degree in a relevant field, ideally supported by substantial experience at postdoctoral or equivalent level, with a proven research track record demonstrated through high calibre outputs of a quality likely to contribute to our future research excellence framework (REF) submission.
We expect to hold the interviews in late 2016. While we would prefer to communicate with all applicants individually this is not always possible, so if you have not heard from us by early December 2016 please assume that you have not been shortlisted on this occasion.
All activities undertaken within this role need to be in compliance with the University's Safety Policy and undertaken in a way that demonstrates the University's commitment to Equality and Diversity for staff, students and partners.
For an informal discussion about any aspect of this post, please contact Dr Sarah Collins (Associate Professor in Animal Behaviour & Welfare) at sarah.collins@plymouth.ac.uk
This is a full-time post working 37 hours per week on a permanent basis.
Plymouth University is committed to an inclusive culture and respecting diversity, and welcomes applications from all sections of the community and is a Stonewall diversity champion.
The University holds a Bronze Athena SWAN Award which recognises commitment to advancing women's career in STEMM academia.
Plymouth University has been recognised by Bloomberg as one of the 50 best UK employers for 2016.
