University of Plymouth has a strong and growing international reputation for marine education and research, with over 180 academic staff, 250 researchers and 2,600 students working in marine and maritime areas. Much of this work is conducted by the School of Biological and Marine Sciences, with the provision of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Marine Biology and Marine Science, and supported by state-of-the-art field equipment, ROVs, and a fleet of vessels. The waterfront Marine Station (completed Nov 2014) provides state of the art teaching and research facilities, including classrooms, a wet laboratory, aquarium, equipment stores, and diving facilities.
The School of Biological and Marine Sciences is now seeking to appoint a full-time permanent Technical Manager for the Marine Station, to manage and lead in the development of the Marine Station Technical Team (including boat skippers) who support both teaching and research. As Marine Station Technical Manager you will: be a central member of the Marine Station Management Committee; be the Marine Station Safety Co-ordinator; oversee management of the academic fleet; be the public point of contact for Marine Station activities.
You will supervise the provision of teaching and research support in line with the Marine Station's mission including management of full time and on call staff, management of outreach activities related to the Marine Station, supervise administrative, maintenance and procurement activity, oversee Marine Station data management and liaise with all appropriate University Directorates regarding Marine Station infrastructure.
You will have an appropriate degree preferably in a marine sciences related discipline, have knowledge of small commercial vessel fleet operations and legislation, have a high level of computer literacy including familiarity with databases, be an effective manager and communicator.
The post requires flexible working, including occasional evenings and weekends and provides a generous annual leave allowance of 35 days (+ statutory holidays).
