The University wishes to appoint a Facilities Manager for the Plymouth Electron Microscopy Centre (PEMC).
This is an exciting opportunity to lead the PEMC in its next phase of development, overseeing its move to a new, bespoke facility and building on its existing capacity to support high-quality research, commercial and teaching work. You will work alongside academic and business development leaders in developing the PEMC’s portfolio of work, undertaken by an expert team of core technical staff.
The PEMC is a unique facility within the University of Plymouth. It is supported by a new Strategic Board with a mission to significantly enhance PEMC’s research and commercial activities across the science and industrial sectors. It is well positioned to achieve this uplift using its range of electron microscopes (SEM, TEM & FIB-SEM) equipped with an array of analytical techniques (EDS, WDS, EBSD, STEM & CL), as well as dedicated sample preparation equipment for life and physical sciences, and engineering.
The Centre’s interdisciplinary team of dedicated electron microscopists already works across the University and with industrial / commercial partners. Team members perform essential roles that enable students and staff in one-to-one and whole group settings, and maintain and develop a range of electron microscopes and sample preparation equipment. Working closely with stakeholders, our technicians share their knowledge with others, helping them to develop their ideas and fulfil their academic and / or business potential.
In your role as Facilities Manager you will oversee the day-to-day functions of the PEMC (including line-managing the Centre’s team of technicians) and be involved in setting strategic direction / strategic decision making with the Board. Critical to the future success of the PEMC will be your ability to work successfully with others in the university and beyond, and to support the University’s business development team in developing a strong technical understanding of the facility’s capabilities and applications in both commercial and academic contexts.
Please demonstrate how you meet the essential criteria outlined in the knowledge, qualifications, training and experience elements of the job description in your supporting statement.
