The School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences (SoGEES) invites you to apply for the post of Research Fellow at the University of Plymouth. SoGEES employs staff across a wide range of research areas, and enjoys excellent support from well-resourced library and geospatial analysis facilities. As well as breadth and depth within SoGEES, we have strong academic links across the institution with, for example, the University's Marine Institute and the cross-disciplinary Sustainable Earth Institute. This is an exciting chance to be part of a progressive and cutting-edge University in a beautiful location, working within a collaborative, timely project that can make a difference.
This is a full-time position working 37 hours per week on a fixed term basis for a period of 3 years due to funding. The position is available from 1st May 2019 to 30th April 2022 based in the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences (with links to the School of Psychology) at the University of Plymouth. This 3 year (36 month) post is part of an exciting Horizon 2020 project 'RURITAGE' (www.ruritage.eu), a collaboration between 40 EU and non-EU organisations and institutions.
"The main ambition of RURITAGE is the creation of an innovative rural regeneration paradigm based on Cultural and Natural Heritage, consolidating the role of culture as the fourth pillar of sustainable development and contributing to economic growth, social inclusion and environmental sustainability in rural areas. By establishing a new heritage-led rural regeneration approach, RURITAGE aims to turn rural areas into sustainable development demonstration laboratories, through the enhancement of their unique heritage potential. Based on past research and experiences, RURITAGE has identified 6 Systemic Innovation Areas, namely Pilgrimage, Resilience, Sustainable Local Food production, Integrated Landscape Management, Migration and Art & Festival, and 11 Cross-cutting Themes, which represent the ways in which cultural heritage acts as driver for regeneration of a rural area and its economic, social and environmental development".
You will be expected to apply economic, social and behavioural research methods to: a) elicit perceptions and behaviour patterns from rural communities regarding drivers of sustainable development through interviews, surveys, workshops and focus groups; b) design and conduct training with partners in economic and social data collection and decision support tools; and c) analyse data and write up reports and communicate results. You will work within a multi-disciplinary team based at the University of Plymouth including Dr Lynda Rodwell, Dr Sabine Pahl, Dr John Martin and Professor Iain Stewart.
The Ruritage project team is multi-disciplinary, including social sciences, psychology, geography and environmental sciences, and is based in the cities and rural regions across Europe and beyond. We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and highly able individual who has a multidisciplinary perspective. You must be capable of working well independently and as part of a team when required. You will be expected to collaborate extensively with all other collaborating partners. The post will also involve extensive travel to collaborating countries in Europe for research as well as training programme delivery.
Please demonstrate how you meet the essential criteria outlined in the knowledge, qualifications, training and experience elements of the job description in your supporting statement, and please also provide a copy of your CV.
