The Faculty of Arts and Humanities, at the University of Plymouth, invites applications for multiple Doctoral Teaching Assistant positions.
The Faculty is advertising for multiple Doctoral Teaching Assistants to join its postgraduate research community of over 450 researchers who work across a variety of disciplines recognised as world-leading in the arts, humanities and social science disciplines. The Faculty has long been a national leader in fostering civic engagement focusing on creative industries and economies, art and design practices, and social action research into the changing global societies and challenging real-world issues.

The School of Art, Design and Architecture is offering Doctoral Teaching Assistantships with Full Fee Scholarship for 4 years (3 years plus 1 writing up) in a PhD in the areas of Architecture, Design or Built Environment and a Part Time (0.3 FTE salary approximately £9,283 per annum) contract at Grade 6. The School welcomes research proposals for a PhD study in the areas of:
Critical Urbanism, Urban Ecologies, Urban Design, Urban Regeneration, Smart Cities, Digital Communities, Sustainable and Environmental Architecture, Spatial Violence, Humanitarian Architecture, Displaced Spatial Practice, Film and Architecture, Architecture and Visual Culture, Cultural Identity and Architecture, Sensory Design, Architectural and Performative Practice, Design Cognition, Design in Action, Digital Design, Building Performance Analysis and Construction Management, Energy Efficient Buildings.
The School of Society and Culture is offering Doctoral Teaching Assistantships with Full Fee Scholarship for 4 years (3 years plus 1 writing up) in a PhD in the areas listed below and a Part Time (0.2 FTE salary approximately £6,188 per annum) contract at Grade 6. The School welcomes research proposals for a PhD study in the areas of:
English and Creative Writing, History, Art History, Music (including Computer Music and Brain-Computer Music Interfacing), Performing Arts, Criminology, Law, Sociology, International Relations, Politics.
Please note that the School of Humanities and Performing Arts is in the process of merging with the School of Law, Criminology and Government making the School of Society and Culture at the beginning of academic year 2021/22. Please refer to the School’s individual pages for further information.
Plymouth Institute of Education is offering Doctoral Teaching Assistantships with Full Fee Scholarship for 4 years (3 years plus 1 writing up) in PhD in Education and a Part Time (0.2 FTE salary approximately £6,188 per annum) contract at Grade 6. The School welcomes research proposals for a PhD study in the areas of:
Children and Families, Inclusion, Learning Outside Formal Education and Education Policy. The School would also welcome applications around Civic Engagement and Widening Participation and Inclusion in HE.
Plymouth Business School is offering Doctoral Teaching Assistantships with Part-Time Fee Scholarship for 5 years (4 years plus 1 writing up) in a PhD in the areas of Business and Management, Finance, Marketing, International Logistics, Supply Chain and Shipping Management or Tourism and Hospitality and a Part Time (0.5 FTE salary approximately £15,471 per annum) contract at Grade 6. The School welcomes research proposals for a PhD study in the areas of:
Sustainable supply chain management, Digital marketing / social media management, Coastal communities, Systems modelling and game theory, Social enterprise and entrepreneurship, Big data, business intelligence and knowledge economy, Economic behaviour, regional development and financial innovation, Maritime transportation including international shipping and logistics. The School would welcome applications that have the potential to have academic impact (how it changes how we think and theorise); economic and social impact (how it contributes to society and the economy as well as how it benefits individuals, organisations and nations); and instrumental impact (how it can make policy, practice, service provision and legislation better as well as how it shapes behaviour).
In addition to the PhD Fee Scholarship, you will be trained to undertake teaching within a relevant subject area alongside your discipline specific Undergraduate Programme team as well as participating in our research activities. You will not be expected to teach more than hours indicated as part of the fractional post you are applying for (factoring for 8 weeks holiday entitlement). This will be paid at Grade 6 on the University's pay spine. Research training will be supported through the University's Doctoral College, the Faculty and the Schools’ Research Training programmes, where you will be required to attend various 'research skills' modules.
You will pursue a PhD degree supported by world class research teams and gain professional teaching experience within one of the areas indicated by each of the Schools.
You are required to have a good honours degree (1st Class or an Upper 2:1) and likely a Masters degree in a relevant subject (completed with Distinction or a High Merit), and a strong wish to pursue a PhD in a relevant topic. You will also be interested in a career in the Higher Education Sector, specifically in teaching and research, and thus need to possess excellent communication and team working skills. You are highly encouraged to identify possible PhD supervisors in the areas of your research, and are invited to contact them in advance of making applications.
