We are recruiting a graduate engineer to work on an exciting composites design/prototyping project.
RampCo is a consortium of European SMEs, funded by the European Union FP7 programme. The objective is to develop a lightweight, portable wheelchair ramp to facilitate access to public buildings throughout Europe. Plymouth University is one of the 'RTD' partners in the consortium, and will be responsible for evaluating the potential for weight reduction, outline and detail design of composite components and joints. We will use a combination of numerical design tools and laboratory testing, and work closely with manufacturing partners.
Person specification:* Graduate engineer with demonstrable ability in design and project management. Knowledge/experience in composite materials design and manufacture is highly desirable.* Good written and spoken communication skills, evidenced by coherent, concise technical reports and presentations.* Ability to critically evaluate published information, and extract relevant data from a wide variety of sources.* Good practical skills, including the ability to manufacture composite test samples, design and maintain accurate process records and to specify and carry out experimental testing.* Competence in the use of CAD and FEA, ideally involving laminated composite structures. * Full UK driving licence. The ability to travel to project consortium meetings in other European countries.

This is a full-time post working 37 hours per week on a fixed-term basis. The RampCo consortium is funded for 2 years from December 2013, which takes the product to full-scale in situ evaluation. We will offer an initial contract of 18 months duration, with the possibility of extension to 2 years, depending on project spend. The successful applicant will be encouraged to register for a Master's degree by research.
The successful applicant will be expected to start as soon as possible.
