A unique new research facility designed to address the key cyber security challenges facing the shipping industry is being established at the University of Plymouth.
The £3million Cyber-SHIP Lab, supported by funding from Research England, part of UK Research and Innovation, and industry, will bring together a host of connected maritime systems currently found on an actual ship’s bridge. Experts in cyber security and information systems will then assess them for weaknesses, and identify the human and technological changes needed to make them secure for the future. This is an exciting opportunity to shape maritime cyber-security in a key location with this unique lab facility along with other Plymouth infrastructure such as a cyber-range, ship simulators, and a section of Plymouth Sound that can be used for research (Smart Sound).
The Lab is being developed and delivered in partnership with key industry sectors including equipment manufacturers, solution developers, shipping and port operators, ship builders, classification agencies and insurance companies. This enables the research team at UoP to examine a multitude of research questions, technical cyber threats, risks, and solutions, but also multi-disciplinary areas such as socio-technical, policy and standards, supply chain security, and more.
It will feature a range of cutting edge maritime technology including radars, voyage data recorders (VDR), Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS), automatic identification systems (AIS), communications devices and more to address real world issues and problems.
You will hold a PhD/equivalent international qualification or commensurate level of recognition/international profile in a relevant discipline (such as Computer Science, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence) and will have an in depth knowledge of the subject area to enable innovation and new understanding in the field. In addition, a solid foundation in the underlying principles of Computer Science, Engineering, or similar is a must, along with experience of delivering high quality research led teaching.
This is a full-time position working 37 hours per week on an initial fixed-term basis until December 2023 due to funding, with the potential for extension based on project deliverables.
