Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in Chemical Ecology
Description
Dr Mick Hanley (School of Biological and Marine Sciences, University of Plymouth) and Dr Nicole van Dam (German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research, Leipzig, Germany) seek a PDRA to work on a Leverhulme Trust funded project Location, location, location: geographical patterns in seedling defence and herbivore interactions. The objectives are
to determine whether patterns of variation in seedling resistance to herbivory corroborate established biogeographic theories about latitudinal variation in plant defence.
You will conduct cutting edge research in the field of plant-herbivore interactions and chemical ecology. This specifically involves leading experiments on snail foraging behaviour and linking these to the quantification and analysis of plant defence metabolites. Consequently you will have a PhD in chemical ecology or similar, experience of working on plant volatiles (e.g. GC-MS) and/or metabolomes (e.g. LC-qToFMS). Ideally, you have research experience in plant-animal interactions and multi-variate data analysis. A full UK driving licence (or international equivalent) , the ability to work independently, plan, design and manage experiments, and convert research data into high quality publications are essential.
Snail behaviour and seedling selection experiments will be based at Plymouth for the first 18 months of the project; analysis of seedling defence chemistry will then be undertaken at Leipzig. Consequently the PDRA will be expected to relocate from Plymouth to Germany, and interface between both Institutions on a regular basis. In addition, the project requires the PDRA to organise and undertake independent field work in additional European locations. The PDRA will receive additional project and career development support, via the annual UoP Performance Development Review process.
Please demonstrate how you meet the essential criteria outlined in the knowledge, qualifications, training and experience elements of the job description in your supporting statement.
Please note a full UK driving licence (or international equivalent) is requirement of this role.
For an informal discussion to find out more about the role then please contact Dr Mick Hanley by email mehanley@plymouth.ac.uk or by telephone on(+44) 01752 584631
During the stay in Leipzig, the PDRA will be entitled to apply for equal opportunity funds supporting career development of female scientists and scientists with family care tasks at iDiv.
We offer a competitive salary package and a generous pension and holiday scheme. We also offer a range of other benefits, including ongoing development opportunities.
This is a full-time contract working 37 hours per week on a fixed term basis for 3 years due to funding.
The University of Plymouth is committed to equality of opportunity, promoting a diverse and inclusive culture, demonstrated through our commitment to the gender equality Athena SWAN Charter and as a Stonewall diversity champion. All applications will be judged solely on merit, however, we particularly welcome applications from groups currently under-represented in the workforce, for example black and minority ethnic groups.
University of Plymouth holds a TEF (Teaching Excellence and Student Outcomes Framework) Silver by the Office for Students.
