We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to work on the NERC-funded project “The 3D anatomy of magma transport at fast-spreading ocean ridges”. The project aims to determine along-axis variations in migration pathways followed by magma as it entered and exited from an axial melt lens system preserved within the Oman ophiolite, the world’s best analogue for fast-spreading oceanic lithosphere. It will combine magnetic fabric, paleomagnetic and geochemical methods to develop a comprehensive model for the anatomy of the magma systems responsible for forming two-thirds of the Earth's surface, using the rock record to test and challenge current paradigms for seafloor spreading processes. The project will involve fieldwork in Oman, and will build upon our recent research demonstrating variable flow trajectories in lower crustal gabbos (see Morris et al., 2019, Geology, 47, 275-278, doi: 10.1130/G45442.1).
You will be working within the Centre for Research in Earth Sciences in the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences (https://www.plymouth.ac.uk/research/earth-sciences) within the Faculty of Science and Engineering, where you will conduct detailed magnetic analyses of an extensive suite of igneous samples collected by you in Oman. You will also spend six months in total at Cardiff University carrying out geochemical data collection. You will work within a multidisciplinary team of investigators consisting of Professor Antony Morris (paleomagnetism and geodynamics; Plymouth), Dr Michelle Harris (petrology and geochemistry; Plymouth), Professor Chris MacLeod (tectonics and geochemistry; Cardiff) and Dr Benoit Ildefonse (structural geology and electron backscatter diffraction; Montpellier). The role requires essential specialist knowledge and experience of magnetic methods (magnetic anisotropy and/or paleomagnetism) applied to geological/tectonic problems. A complementary understanding of geochemical methods is desirable but not essential.

This is a full-time position working 37 hours per week on a fixed-term basis for a period of 3 years due to funding, starting 1st October 2021.
