BA (Hons) Photography and BA (Hons) Documentary Photography are vibrant awards in the School of Art, Design and Architecture, in the Faculty of Arts & Humanities. They are part of the Art Area of the School, which includes programmes of study at undergraduate, postgraduate and research student levels in Fine Art, Media Arts and Film & Television Production.
The three year BA Photography programme is a well established generic award offering opportunites for students to study a broad range of contemporary practices. BA Documentary Photography is a relatively new award, validated in 2017, which builds on a more specific curriculum. Both awards draw on the extensive experience of the programme team, and relate to the high profile of photographic research in the School, in particular, Photography Research and the Land/Water and the Visual Arts Research networks.
The provision is based on the main University campus at the heart of the city of Plymouth. Based in the historic Scott Building, course facilities include analogue and digital imaging technologies and production spaces, photographic studios (including a bespoke daylight studio), dedicated Base Rooms and exhibiting space. Wider resources also include moving image and film studios, letterpress, printmaking, silkscreen and textile workshops. The campus also offers a major library provision and a large art gallery, which programmes a wide range of temporary exhibitions of contemporary practice. It is located in the North Hill cultural area of the city, opposite Plymouth City Museum and Library, and five minutes waldk from Plymouth Rail Station. Plymouth, an Ocean City, is located between the sea, the inland Devon moors, the Tamar River, and Cornwall, and, as such, offers many opportunities for research-led, investigative photography.
We are seeking a full time Lecturer to lead both undergraduate programmes of study and their ongoing curriculum development. You will contribute to practical and theoretical teaching as well as continuing research within the discipline. You will have HE teaching experience and the necessary technical abilities to teach and research in the field of photographic practice. The post will also involve input into employability, commercialisation and public engagement within curriculum development. Importantly, this exciting position requires effective leadership, excellent team-building abilities and outstanding communication skills.
You will hold a Masters level degree, or equivalent, in Photography or a related discipline, and be able to demonstrate relevant professional experience as well as established research or scholarly activity and an evolving academic profile appropriate to the role.
Accountable to the Associate Head of School (Art) and working closely with the programme staff, you will have strong communication and presentation skills and be expected to lead in curriculum development and course management. Key aspects of the role also include delivery of teaching/lectures, module leadership, supervision of practical and theoretical study, personal tutoring, assessment and feedback, maintaining quality of delivery as well as organisation of recruitment activity, educational field trips/visits, visiting lectures, career spines, student work placements, student competitions and end of year shows as required. This is a full-time post, and, as implied through the range of responsibilities detailed, on occasion you will be expected to contribute to activities (open days, field trips, student exhibitions) beyond standard working hours.
You will be responsible for developing and maintaining good working relationships with all stakeholders in the University as well as in industry, to ensure the overall aims of the programmes are met. Being highly motivated and an excellent communicator, you will actively contribute to aspects of a university academic position as well as contributing to external profile and recruitment events for the Awards and the School.
