We wish to appoint an enthusiastic individual to join the University to work on the AHRC funded project Celtic Connections and Crannogs: A new Study of Lake
Settlements Across the Irish Sea, working with Plymouth PI Dr Nicola Whitehouse. The project is part of a collaboration across four institutions (Universities of Plymouth, Newcastle, Queen's Belfast and Southampton), led by Professor A.G. Brown (University of Southampton). The position is based at Plymouth University.
Working closely with the Plymouth PI and other project partners, especially Dr Peter Langdon, University of Southampton, the role will involve you undertaking research on the archaeological and palaeoecological significance of sub-fossil beetles and chironomid material, sampled, identified and analysed as part of the project.
The role will include organisation and participation in fieldwork to support the project (Ireland and Scotland), including periods away from home, in addition to the laboratory analyses. You will also undertake analyses of findings, generate suitable reports on these and contribute to joint publications emanating from the project.
Applicants should:
*
Hold an Undergraduate and/or Masters degree in Archaeology, Geography or
cognate discipline
*
Hold a PhD qualification in a relevant subject (e.g. in Quaternary entomology;
Palaeoecology; Environmental Archaeology). Applicants who can demonstrate
that they have passed their PhD viva (with minor corrections) at the time of
application are also welcome to apply;
*
Analytical expertise in the extraction, identification and analysis of sub-fossil
Coleoptera and/or Chironomids. Candidates with demonstrated expertise in both
areas are especially welcome to apply;
*
Have expertise in dealing with archaeological and/or palaeoecological material
and relevant fieldwork experience;
*
Have excellent communication skills, written and oral;
*
Have experience of report writing;
*
Have good organisational skills, and self-motivation, coupled with the ability to
work as part of a team;
*
Candidates should have experience of publication, within peer review literature, and
of presenting their research at conferences;
*
Be willing to travel away from home to undertake periods of fieldwork and attend
overseas conferences;
*
Hold a clean driving license;
*
Ideally, have knowledge of the archaeological periods covered by the research
project (later prehistoric, historic periods);
*
Ideally, have analytical and programming skills in "R"
