The Faculty of Science and Engineering is inviting applications to join our Engineering Technical Team within the School of Engineering. You will provide a professional level of technical support for teaching, research, and consultancy activities within the internationally renowned COAST laboratory. You must be able to demonstrate appropriate technical and scientific knowledge, client-facing skills and project management experience to implement and assist in the efficient and effective design and execution of scaled wave tank experiments.
You will have the ability to develop solutions for practical implementation of model design and instrumentation support systems for marine renewable energy and offshore engineering applications as well as coastal engineering projects, and will provide a technical interface for all users both internal and external who wish to use the facility.
You will form part of our highly skilled technical team and will be based in the COAST laboratory of our Marine Building on our Plymouth campus. The work will involve designing, developing and testing experimental scale-models, and will be client-facing. You will take responsibility under guidance of the COAST laboratory Scientific Manager and COAST Project Coordinator for managing the end to end workflow of projects delegated to you which will include a blend of student, research and commercially focused projects.
This position will suit an experienced ocean or coastal engineer who has relevant modelling and testing experience or a graduate engineer who has knowledge and experience of practical ocean engineering or marine renewable energy conversion and a passion to learn about laboratory testing and instrumentation. You must have a good general engineering ability, experience of working as part of a team but also be able to demonstrate individual initiative, be self-motivated and capable of problem solving with engineering design. You must be capable of constructing and setting up complex models and experiments using a range of materials. You will liaise with businesses, professional engineers and academics from across the marine sectors and internationally using your excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Annual leave may be restricted during certain periods of the year due to the business needs
* This role will require some physically demanding work e.g. working at heightover water, construction of large models using heavy materials and wading.
