Plymouth University is seeking to appoint an excellent researcher and teacher to the position of Lecturer in Earth Sciences, to join one of the most successful Earth Science groups in the UK and complement our existing strengths in research and teaching. Applicants must have experience of research in either fluid/rock interactions or geophysics. Within these broad quantitative fields your research interests may include (but are not restricted to) the following topics: Fluid/rock interaction: petroleum/oilfield processes; melt migration processes; alteration in fluid flow; mineral reactions/ore genesis; hydrogeology
Geophysics: exploration geophysics; geophysical monitoring; palaeomagnetism and tectonics; magnetic anisotropy.
As a member of our team, you must also be capable of contributing to broader Earth Science teaching outside your research specialisation, and have a passion for geological fieldwork.
As part of the Centre for Research in Earth Sciences (http://www.plymouth.ac.uk/research/cres ), you will benefit from a collegiate environment that promotes high quality, novel and interdisciplinary research. You will be expected to develop an active, internationally competitive research programme that complements and extends our existing profile. You will contribute to the School's ambition to excel in REF2020. Hence, you should have a track record (commensurate with career stage) of scientific publications in international, peer-reviewed journals of a standard consistent with HEFCE Research Excellence Framework 3* and 4* output grade definitions. You will also be expected to submit grant applications for research support, and to work with colleagues within and external to the University to submit larger grants.
You will have a commitment to high quality teaching and be able to enthuse and engage students in order to deliver an excellent learning experience. You must be able to contribute to undergraduate teaching in Earth Sciences (including fieldwork) and will also be involved in the supervision of field-based Honours projects (including geological mapping), as well as research-based Masters and PhD projects. You will be expected to contribute to the further enhancement of quantitative aspects of our programmes, including developing innovation in the delivery of fundamental mathematics and quantitative/digital dataset skills for geoscientists.
This is a full-time position working 37 hours per week on a permanent basis.
